Our travel schedule will take us to Java, Sulawesi and Kalimantan. After an orientation in Jakarta, we will fly to South Sulawesi and stay in Makassar and then travel to Tana Toraja. Tana Toraja, according to Sam, is going to be the most unique community we will visit. The Toraja have these elaborate funeral ceremonies and honor the dead as if they are still alive. There are cave graves and hanging graves all over the place. My excitement (nervousness?) about Tana Toraja makes it my number one destination choice before traveling. We will also visit the orangutans in Kalimantan so that is choice two for most intriguing. Third choice is just about everything about Yogyakarta and the surrounding temples. Borobudur Temple, tracing the Buddhist beliefs of life in the everyday world all the way up to Nirvana, is probably top of the list at this point. The Prambanan temples (Hindu) are next on the list.

Planning and preparing by reading the Lonely Planet is one thing, but much more important to me will be the multitudes of opportunities to meet people in schools, places of worship, and in communities. Food preparation and eating – the great human common practice – is clearly going to be the easiest, most pleasurable way of connecting. Julie and Jay rave about the food in Indonesia and make my mouth water with descriptions of flavors and scents.
